Romanian Rescue Dogs

After becoming involved with Romanian Rescue in 2015, both as a support advisor to new adopters and a fosterer myself, I was led to look deeper into the thinking, feeling, emotional depths of the dogs we spend our lives with. I began to realise how the Romanian dogs were different to British born dogs, how their genetics and bloodline, being from street dogs, meant they seemed to be more in more in tune with their instinctive nature’s. I had to learn and adjust the ways I interacted with and worked with these dogs, to accommodate their more literal and cautious characteristics. It became very evident that these dogs responded differently to ‘training’ in the conventional sense at times, and even in day to day interactions. I found myself altering my communications with them, looking deeper at their communications with me and adjusting my teaching approach, all of which resulted stronger bonding, understanding and results in terms of behavioural response.

Through the articles and information I have written on Romanian dogs, I have been contacted by and worked with many adopters and their new Romanian family members, helping them to understand the nature of Rommies better and therefore have a greater understanding of how best to help them integrate into their new lives with as little stress as possible for everyone involved.
It is worth bearing in mind, that even if your Romanian Rescue was never actually a ‘street dog’ as many of them aren’t, their genetics and hereditary traits are still those from a long line of street dogs. As such, they can still possess a more streetwise perspective on life which can sometimes be bemusing for adopters, especially for those of you new to living with a foreign rescue.
I have met many adopters, myself included, with a wealth of experience spanning many years of living with dogs. Most of them have faced and overcome difficult behavioural issues with rescue dogs in the past, but they nearly all agree that the Romanian Rescue dogs definitely bring a different set of challenges with them, simply because of the way they perceive and respond to the world around them.
